Two Effective Treatments For Agoraphobia

Hypnosis for AgoraphobiaBefore I became a hypnotherapist I thought agoraphobia was the fear of leaving one’s home, but this is a severe form of agoraphobia.

What is agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia has been around a long time. The word comes from the Greek words agora meaning (market place) and phobos (fear) – fear of the market place.

Agoraphobics are afraid of being in places or situations where a panic attack could make it difficult or impossible for them to leave. They are afraid of being humiliated and/or losing control.

Agoraphobia, like most fears, holds a person hostage. Everyday activities are avoided – flying, driving freeways, visiting amusement parks, taking long trips, wide open spaces etc. The agoraphobic becomes an expert at avoiding the places and activities that will bring on a panic attack. However, in time, this condition takes a toll on one’s personal and professional life. Relationships suffer, jobs are lost, missed opportunities, adventures and the unknown are avoided. An agoraphobic life is more about surviving than thriving.

Two effective treatments for agoraphobia

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an effective short-term therapy that helps agoraphobics identify and change the destructive thoughts that lead to their negative behavior. Read more about Cognitive More about CBT here

Hypnosis is also effective in retraining the brain of the agoraphobic, so he/she responds calmly to places and situations that were once stressful and fearful. It desensitizes the client to anxiety-inducing stimuli, and changes the negative thoughts that feed them . More about what hypnosis is here

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Hypnotherapy are not overnight cures. In general it will take between 12 to 15 weekly sessions lasting an hour of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Repetition is the key for success with hypnotherapy.

If you suffer from agoraphobia take time to study and learn about it and choose the best treatment for you. Agoraphobia becomes worse with time, so you should address this condition before it spirals completely out of control.
